Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration
Michael Reles is a Senior Executive Service leader with extensive experience in transportation, government, and federal grants. Michael joined Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), an operating administration of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in 2014 and has advanced to serve as PHMSA's Chief Financial Officer, securing annual funding increases for over a decade through effective congressional collaboration.
Throughout his career, Michael has successfully implemented good and modern systems to measure performance to make informed decisions. He takes pride in developing future leaders in Federal Financial Management and tackling complex challenges like pipeline engineer recruitment and safety oversight enhancements. Michael has initiated key safety programs and formed strategic partnerships, contributing to significant proposals such as a $1 billion initiative for replacing dangerous aged gas pipelines in underserved communities. Prior to PHMSA, Michael worked for eleven years at the Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy, where he streamlined operations and helped achieve the inclusion of substance abuse treatment in the Affordable Care Act. He has also worked in state and local government implementing safety programs and leading people. Michael excels at communicating complex financial and policy information, fostering consensus among executives and policy makers.
